But let me just tell you this: There’s no such thing as a perfect resume because if there was, you wouldn’t be getting rejected 😅

BUT, today we are going to discuss the TOP 3 things you can do to improve your resume and your chances of getting past the resume screening stage.

Struggling to put numbers to your accomplishments? You're not alone! Here's a pro tip: Use the PAR (Problem, Action, Result) method. Here’s an example of the PAR method for one bullet point:

“Engineered automated Python pipeline that processed 2M+ customer records daily, reducing manual data analysis time by 90%.”

What should I do next? Check out this LinkedIn article on how to use the PAR method to describe your achievements on your resume!

Did you know that 98.8% of Fortune 500 companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), an automated AI system that scans submitted resumes for keywords and ranks them based on how well they fit the job description?

Well, here’s how you can beat this bot in just 3 simple steps:

  1. Carefully read the job listing

  2. Include role and industry specific keywords

  3. Place keywords strategically throughout your entire resume (don’t just throw them into one skills section)

Here’s an example using this job description:

Let’s say you worked with Python in a past experience as a researcher. A possible bullet point to include under previous experience (the bold phrases are key words taken from the job post and integrated into the bullet point):

  • Contributed to university's distributed systems research lab under PhD mentor, developing Python scripts to analyze large-scale system performance data and collaborating with 4 researchers to identify and debug network latency issues, reducing processing time by 35%

Remember, keyword frequency matters, but keep it as natural as possible!

Now, if you want to run your own resume through one of these systems, check out Jobscan’s free ATS software!

After you apply to an internship, don't just wait, use your secret weapon, LinkedIn!

  1. Search for the company's hiring manager or recruiter on LinkedIn

  2. Send a brief, personalized message

  3. Mention the role and express your interest

Here is a great template that can be used to reach out to recruiters after you apply!

TIPS for reaching out:

  1. Keep it concise - recruiters receive hundreds of messages

  2. Reference specific aspects of the company/role to show you've done your research

  3. If you find a shared connection (same university, similar interests, etc.), mention it naturally but don't force it!!
